Simple Tips for Pattern Mixing

Lifestyle

October 3, 2019

I thought that we were entering fall in Michigan but currently we are getting a full spectrum of weather within a 24 hour period. The mornings start cold and warm up into the 80s before dipping back down into the 50’s. Welcome to Michigan I guess? When I leave for the day I always wear layers. My first purchase for the fall wardrobe is this houndstooth boy blazer from Anthropologie. I ordered both a large and a medium and ended up keeping the medium. This is a sweatshirt like material so it has a bit of give to it.

When coordinating patterns there are a few fun ways to start mixing it up. the key is colors and pattern size. Start with the basics and work your way up to mixing multiple patterns at once.

To begin replace the solid with a pattern of the same color. Example the stripe skirt above is black and white stripe, I replaced the black t shirt with a black and white polka dot top.

The next step is keeping colors similar so when I chose to add my jacket it worked out well that it was also black and white. Since Michigan is a bit unpredictable I added a yellow cardigan that matches the yellow thread thread in the jacket. I kept everything in the same color family but three different patterns.

To make all three patterns working together mix up the pattern size. If you are wearing a tiny polka dot try matching it with a wide stripe or even a Large polka dot. If you have all the same size pattern it can get a little blurry.

If my outfit is super busy like pictured above I like to keep my shoes pretty neutral in a solid color. I bought these Tory Burch shoes last year and the bow adds another element to the outfit without clashing with the patterns above.

What are some of your favorite pattern mashing combos? Here is another of my favorite!
