better than anything cake

ok so those familiar with this cake know it’s real name is “better than sex” cake but since my grandma reads this as well as multiple family members i just figured let’s go with anything. i mean, it’s subjective right? ok i’m done going there. back to focusing on better than anything cake.

typically my aunt pat brings this to christmas parties. it’s a staple. i know what dessert i’m getting at each christmas party. i’m getting butterfinger at my grandma Hops, i’m getting better than anything cake at my grandma hoppens. yes my mothers maiden name was hop, married my dad became hoppen. extremely confusing as a child because i didn’t know what form my last name would take on. hoppening? hoppens? hoppened? and then what about my childen… how would the last name change again. very confusing and very relieved to find out that’s how this thing works. because clearly i was a very concerned 8 year old about the ways of the world.

back to the cake.

typically it’s what i call a “cheat cake” because you use a boxed cake mix. and normally you would use a devils food cake mix but the health food grocery store i was at only had organic chocolate cake mix. fine. i went with it. also the health food store only sold organic salted caramel sauce instead of regular caramel sauce which in hindsight would have been pretty good. but not wanting to stop at one more store i decided i’ll just make my own. so if you don’t want to babysit melting sugar on the stove a simple caramel ice cream topping will do the trick.

grab yourself a container of cool whip and a bag of heath bars and you’re pretty much good to go.

here is the official ingredient list:

  • 1 package of chocolate cake mix baked according to directions in a 9×13 pan
  • 14oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup caramel ice cream topping or make your own
  • 5oz of heath bars crushed into bits
  • 8oz container of cool whip

once you bake the cake according to instructions poke a bunch of holes in the cake with a fork.

mix the sweetened condensed milk with almost all of the caramel and pour evenly over the cake allowing the cake to soak it all up.

sprinkle almost all of the heath bars on top of the soaked cake

spread the cool whip over the top like frosting. drizzle the remaining caramel and heath bar on top. serve and enjoy. this cake doesn’t keep long but it’s usually good for at least 24 hours. i assemble right before bringing to the party.
