Spooky Fall Front Porch

House & Home

October 1, 2020

Every Wednesday Otto and I visit the farmers market before taking him to school and we load up on pumpkins for the front porch. I finally had a chance to arrange them a few days ago on the porch and Otto was very adamant that the porch needs to be spooky.
It’s so fun having Otto be old enough to understand what celebrations and holidays are. I am not and have never been a “halloween person” but Otto is very much into it this year. He loves all his little songs about halloween, the idea of going to honey and grandma’s house for candy and getting to dress up in a costume. He feels very strongly that he should be a ghost this year but I have another idea.

Fall Porch with Pumpkin and Mums

Last year otto was Colonel Sanders and I think it might have been my best work yet. This year I’m going for a family theme. Don’t tell Joe he doesn’t know yet. Otto and I spent most of our Saturday afternoon sticking these plastic bats to the wall. Letting a toddler help you is a blast but it will also take you 3x as long to do something. He thought it was hilarious when we scared joe with the big fuzzy spiders on the porch.

The pumpkins here all came from local farms and some we even grew ourselves with some leftover garden space. I think my favorite finds were these giant purple cabbages that I bought from a local greenhouse called WW Greenhouse in Hudsonville, MI. The rest of the mums and smaller kale all came from Countryside Greenhouse in Allendale.

The pumpkins on a stick and bittersweet from this spooky ensemble came from Ottawa Glad Growers which is also at the Holland Farmers market. I tried to grow my own pumpkins on a stick but they didn’t grow near as tall as Ottawa’s. I learned that technically they are an eggplant but you don’t want to eat this variety.

Finally the halloween sign is from my girl Our Found Home. We got to meet last year at The Found Cottage Mercantile Market and we now carry her signs at The Found Cottage. We still have a couple left so if you want one stop on in or give the shop a call and we can ship them to you.

I am hoping that my greeneries and pumpkins can last me through November before I switch it all over to Christmas. Are you team halloween? Do you keep it spooky or simple?

Either way, happy spooky almost Halloween!
